as some of you know ive been battling a cyano issue for the past two weeks or so in my 93g cube. last week i did three 25% water changes every other day. i shut my lights off for three days, and when i turned them back on, i reduced to light cycle to 10 hours with 8 hours of 100% intensity, i cut back on my feedings for three times a day to once every other day, and purchased BRS duel media reactor. running high capacity GFO, and rox .8 carbon. with just enuff flow to gently tumble the gfo to maximize time across the carbon.

and all was great until yesterday.

i had to fill up my top off water, and my TDS was 1 ppm. didnt think that it was that huge of an issue, so i used it for my top off. rougtly 2 gallons a day. and yesterday morning about an hour or so after adding my new 1 TDS water, my entire take was cloudy, and not just a little bit. couldnt even see my rocks. but i had to go to work so there was nothing i could do. when i got home my water was clear, but the cyano was back, and covering 70% of the tank. when i got up this morning, again the tank was super cloudy, and today when i got home, it was clear, with almost 100% cyano coverage.

i have no idea what to do, or why its cloudy in the AM and clear at night, and/or whats the next step in the cyano resolution?

Im not going to be able to get a new set of filters for the unit until next week, ill order them tonight, but shipping take a couple days.

also my filter socks go from completely clean to super nasty in about 8 hours. my skimmer removes skim, which is not dark brown, but black skim, cant see through it at all but it takes like a week to fill the collection cup.

I don't think the 1 tds will have an effect on your tank. Are you supplementing your tank with anything?

Are you sure that you have cyan and not dinoflagellents? i just sound to large and growing to fast to be cyan IMO

1 TDS probably will not do anything but you may want to look at new DI resin. The sediment andcarbon blocks have nothing to do with TDS, their sole purpose is to protect the RO membrane from suspended solids, big stuff, not dissolved solids, and chlorine.

What you need to remember though is DI resins start to release weakly ionized substances even before it is exhausted and since they are weakly ionized you may be passing things like silicates, nitrates and phosphates that a TDS meter does not see.

Calculate your rejection rate using your tap water TDS and RO only TDS to ensure the membrane is still doing its job of removing 90 to 98% of the contaminants and get a new DI cartridge or resin refill ASAP. If the sediment and carbon filters are over 6 mnonths old go ahead and replace them also and disinfect the system while you have it down.
