The plan is to put down a piece of egg crate before rocks and sand in order to keep the rock from touching the glass. Is there any reason I shouldn't do this?

I am sure you are right, I just hate stacking rock directly on glass.

I put in some egg crate on the bottom to mitigate some of the digging creatures from moving around the aquascape/rockwork too much as well.

I would like to have a pistol shrimp/goby pair in here which is why I am so concerned about what is going on under the sand. That is assuming that they won't bother a clam which is the main reason for this build.

I used the eggcrate for my 120 and then with my current 210. I like it for a number of reasons.
First and foremost is when I'm putting together the rockscape the rocks have something to grab onto. The other reasons are that it protects the bottom glass from an avalanche and it keeps digging fish from disrupting the reef. I have a yellow watchman goby and a diamond goby and they haven't personally complained to me about it;D. The other reason is when your setting up the tank you can put the sand in after the rocks. It makes it easier to see what your doing and I put the live sand in just before I start the pumps. I put the sand in slowly with a coffee cup by keeping the cup upright until I reach the bottom and then I slowly turn the cup over. When I'm done I'll push the sand in under the rocks with my hands or scraper. Here are pictures I took of the 120 and the 210 when setting up.
