I have been deciding on putting something on the top of my tank to prevent fish jumping and haven't figured out what I want to do about it, and this morning I woke up to a Wrasse in the overflow, so now its time to figure it out.

I dont want to use glass tops because of the heat issues it causes under Metal Halides. My next resort is the egg crate...do you think that would cause any problems with it melting from heat or causing a pattern to show up in the water? I dont want to be careless and lose a fish over nothing, like what almost happened this morning!

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
You can get a nice netting or screen at a home supply store, much better than egg crate. Allows lighting in and keeps fish in. I have had fish jump through egg crate. I have seen some threads on this forum with both the netting and screen. I believe member yellowbelly has nice netting on his wonderful tank, check out his thread on his tank or do a search.

Decided to DIY...got a screen frame and used deer netting to make a screen and them made acrylic covers for the overflows!

You can get clear mesh like you see in the thread that was linked from Bulk Reef Supply. If it's clear, it won't block any light.

Glad you went this route. Eggcrate would have held up fine, but it shades a lot and, as Corailline pointed out, I've had fish go through it too.

I have an egg crate top right now, I think I'll be taking a trip to the Home Depot today and do one of these mesh screen tops.

Do you have pics of your new top Truespeed??
