    Hi everyone.

I am setting up a 40 long and I am thinking about putting egg crate under the rocks and sand to make the rocks stick up higher out the sand. I am probably only going to do 1" sand bed and if I put 1/2 egg crate all but 1/2" of the rock will be out of the sand.

Anyone see any problem with this? I don't think any of the fish I plan on keeping are diggers. My stock plan is a huma huma trigger, coral beauty, and a damsel.

Should be fine. My neighbor did this even with a Goby.

only draw back i can see: empty pockets under egg crate will be an instant home for bacteria (not only the good kind) and will be virtually uncleanable. You may notice higher ratings of nitrites and or nitrates and ammonia.

I did this. It evens out the pressure of the rock on the bottom of the tank somewhat. If you decide to do this, just cut the eggcrate an inch shy on all sides. You do not want the sharp edges wearing the silicone out on the bottom of the tank.

it would work for your plan. but i must say wrasses are pretty awesome it may be better to just cut the crate so its only under the rocks

I took PVC Pipe.. 2 to 3 inch OD.. Cut it as high as my sand bed.. Drilled holes all around it so no dead spots.. Cheap and works good..

i'm running a shallow sand bed, bout 1 1/2", and used the white plastic cutting boards they won't create the air pockets, but i like the idea of cut egg crates too
