I thought this was good stuff to use as insurance against rock slips. However I was reading another thread that suggested not using it if you plan on having a sand sifter. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

kd, I remember it had to do with eggcrate under a super DSB which would impede the action of critters that supposedly stops the build up of hydrogen sulfide gas pockets. So, if your critters don't dig, the gas builds up and when it releases in big concentrations, you'll have supposedly major problems. I don't know or have never heard/witnessed anything like this. My LFS has an impeccable reputation & they suggested eggcrate under my LR. Thats just my experience for several years now. I should read up on it myself.

I had planned from the start to having a goby/shrimp pair in my tank so I placed my rock on the bottom glass and added the sand around it(not a DSB). I'm not sure, but it seemed to me that eggcrate under the rocks might cause problems for the tunnel network they would eventually build. It means that some of the rock is burried, but now that the tunnels are being dug out, alot of the rock surface that was buried is now exposed but everything is still stable.

i love the eggcrate under my sand saved me a lot of times ,plus eggcrate is only a half inch thick then u have 2 to 3 inches of sand on that i wouldn't say get a sand sifting star but i think a goby and shrimp pair would be fine provided there's a flat piece of rock to make a barrow under

a 1-3 inch sand bed will provide enough coushin to protect the glass, stuff will just build up in the crate id suggest not using it
