egg crate?

I am getting ready to fill my tank, and was wondering why some people put plastic egg crate then live rock on top of it then sand around the perimeter of the egg crate.

 

people do it to soften the blow if rock falls,this way it hits the egg crate and not the glass. I dont like doing this as you cant really have sand sifters unless you have a TON of sand and it all so causes build up!

No need for sorry! the only dumb question is one that isnt asked!

 

I used egg crate on the bottom of my tank so I wouldn't have all the pressure of my rocks pressing against a few points on the glass. The egg crate distributes the weight. I could see where this could "trap" debris and cause buildup within the cubes. I'm about to get a diamond goby so I'll see it it's a problem. Egg crate is only a 1/4" thick so if the diamond goby makes it down through my sand he would pretty much hit bare bottom anyways.

 

I did not do it for the same reason that op said. If you have sand in the tank and you have a topple then the sand will do the same thing as the egg crate. I think its just a place for detrius. I wonder if it woudl have helped but think the sand acts the same was as the egg crate. I put lr in then the sand.
