I got some eggcrate to cover the top of my tank, can I paint it? My initial guess is no, but thought I would ask.

    Thanks.

I believe you may affect the amount of light that gets through into the tank if you paint it. The white reflective surface of the eggcrate helps direct light downward I believe.
On top of that what fish are you trying to prevent from jumping? I've found eggcrate to be 100% useless in preventing fish from jumping, even an adult mccosker's flasher wrasse managed to jump through it. If you have fish over 3" long that are nice and fat maybe it will help but be careful.

blocks too much light. id recommend a honeycomb screen of sorts that has super fine threading if you must have protection from fish jumping... even then, like screwtape said, if the fish arent huge they're just gonna fly through the screen, eggcrate, or whatever else you put on there (beside a solid layer of acrylic..)

i intend to do the same on my mixed-reef build. i understand it helps reduce daily water evaporation. sure helps on my cichlid tanks (and they do fly up and out of the water into that thing on a regular basis lol)

A solid top can also hinder gas exchange. just keep an eye on everything if you do this so you dont kill anything. JMPO
