I am looking into getting a pump for my return line from sump to tank. The mag drive seems to be much more powerful than the eheim but they both seem to be dependable pumps from what I have heard and read. I am curious about added heat. Any opinions on the added heat difference when placing a pump externally vs. internal? Anyone have issues with exessive heat from either of these? Is this a non-issue? Opinions, experiences please...:)

If choosing between a mag7 and an eheim 1048, go ehiem. The eheim is more efficient, and uses less watts. It also heats the tank less since it uses less watts.

Look into a Quiet One 3000, as those are like 40 watts, and they work very well. I use a QO3000 for my return, and I used to use a mag9 that burnt out.

Actually, if going with an eheim, go with a 1260, not the 1048. The 1048 won't pump enough from what I see.

I say go quiet one 3000, less money than either, and the QO has a 3/4" mpt attachment, not the puny 1/2" that the mag7 does. Heck the mag9 had the small 1/2" mpt output and I swear that is one reason the quiet one out performs the mag9 that was rated at 950gph over the QO3000 at like 760gph.

    The mods will move this.

    Mag 7 is 1/2...Mag 9.5 is 3/4" discharge.

An Eheim 1260 is what you need. Compare apples to apples. A 1260 is the Mag 7 equivelent. Eheims use les wats. I don't think you will see any significant heat issues between the two. I saw no difference replacing my 9.5 with a 1262 even though it does use less watts.

Always save watts when you can, but yes Eheims are more expensive.

Also, you needs to keep things straight between internal and external. Internal pumps are not cooled by sitting in the sump. They are cooled by water internally. So if you run a Mag or Eheim externally, you might save a bit of heat, but the bulk of it will still be transfered to the water. AIR cooled external pumps don't transfer heat to the water.

oops, mag9 is 3/4", but the quiet one 3000 is 1" mpt...

No comparison, you are comparing a Cadillac and a Chevy.
My first choice would be an Ocean Runner 2500 with an Eheim coming in a very close second.

Quiet Ones have restart problems and run hotter than blazes. I have literally had two of them go up in flames and will not own another, crap. Try runniong one externally and lay your hand on it while its running! You won't leave it there long for sure. Where do you think that heat is going when its run internally? Mags are not much better but also run hot and consume even more power.

Alright, I just ordered the Eheim 1260 from Marinedepot... it will probably take a month to get here as I am living in Japan...hopefully i'll have everything in place by then to get it up and running...
