I am in the process of designing a sump and am looking at submersible return pumps. The mag drive I had a few years ago ran way too hot and evaporated a lot of water. I've heard good things about Eheim and Quiet One pumps. Anyone have any experience with these? Heat and noise being my main two concerns. Thanks!

Of the two, Eheim is the better pump.

Eheim pumps run cooler than any other pump we have seen available, and they are incredibly reliable. They are also very quiet pumps.

Eheim pumps are often used to drive liquid cooling systems for high end gaming and server computers. That alone is a testament to their cool operation and reliability.

Quiet One pumps are also popular, but do tend to be a little louder and run warmer than Eheim. I would not say that they run "hot" but if you are asking which of the two you should choose - Eheim hands down. If you are on a tighter budget, Quiet One is a good alternative.

I have a 30 gallon so I don't need a ton of power, but I notice the Eheim's go from 160gph to 320gph. Would the 160gh be enough? That would be just over 5x my tank size.

Shoot for 10x to 20x turnover for reef aquariums. You would want at least a 1" drain and 3/4" return to accommodate that sort of flow rating.

I have recent experience with both. Definitely Eheim.
My Quiet One would not restart after power outages.

I have been using Eheim pumps for many years, they are excellent pumps, cool & quiet... IMO the best quality submersible pumps out there. My two 1250's have been running for 15 years now... Don't see them failing anytime soon!

Thanks guys! It looks like I will be going with the Eheim 1250--more pricey, but as the old saying goes,"Those who buy cheap, buy twice!"

I had the same issues. I love my eheim 1262.

The gph listed is at 0ft of head pressure. You need yo use the charts provided to see how much flow you will actually be getting.

I would NOT buy a quiet one....I had three of them...and replaced them all. They work fine at first...but if your power goes out, they often do not restart on thier own. I would not buy one again at any price. Major PITA. I replaced with the supreme mag-drive pumps...and I am very happy with them so far (after about a year). They are at a simmilar price point to the quiet ones

No comparison, its apples and oranges, or Yugo and Mercedes or BMW. I have had two Quiet Ones literally go up in flames, they are poor quality which surprises me knowing heir parent company like I do. Besides the fires they run hot as blazes, my tank dropped two degrees immediately after replacing a QO 4000 with a Ocean Runner 3500. Not to mention the hassle every time the power went off or I shut a pump off for maintenance, restarting is a PITA with them.

I use nothing but Ocean Runner or Eheim exclusively and in that order. Quieter, cooler, lower actual wattage based on testing with a Kill A Watt meter and no restart problems with either.
