I see that the indonesian elegance coral does not have a high success rate compared to the australian elegance.

Ive seen multiple pictures on the web. None too different than the other.

Anyone have any links that would help educate me on distinguishing the difference between the two?

I'm pretty sure the only differentiating factor is the size that polyps will grow to before splitting. It is the same species, after all.

I did some searches of images on the google and found amazing diversity in this coral...
I would be hard pressed to identify
Defining looks. Especially if the are only two main types in this hobby?? Seems like there are more.
This pic is mine, its sure seems hearty , and has done good in this reef noobies tank.. But dont know where it is exactly from other than the Lfs.

What I have found here on the web is the skeleton is probably the only way.... but its not a 100%

From my understanding.... the aussie elegances are usually cut off of a larger colony where they are cut off or broken off. This is visible on the skeleton.

On the indo elegances they are typically a smooth cone skeleton all the way around.

Aussies are typically much hardier than the indo ones.

Agreed. We bring in both Aussie and Indo Elegance. The Aussie's are almost always fragments of large mature colonies that are removed from the reef. Indo's are always juvenile pieces, which as noted have a conical skeleton as they are "free living" in the substrate at this age. As a general rule I would agree the Aussies are hardier. The Indo's seem to be getting much better. We've had a good track record lately by having them imported directly and stabilizing them for several weeks before they are offered for sale. Other than the obvious point of placing them in well established, stable tanks, they also seem to do much better if they are acclimated to bright lighting quite slowly.

    Hope that helps!
