Maybe I shouldn't be concerned, but I've never seen my elegance look this way. About 15 minutes before the two lower shots, I target fed them some cyclopeeze and mysis with a turkey baster. For all I know, this is normal for an elegance that has just been fed, but I've never fed it before today.

So the two top pics are what it looks like all of the time. The two lower pics were snapped just a minute ago, after a target feed.

Anyone see an elegance look this way before?

Yes, Redman. First time ever fed. I should mention that all other corals in the tank look healthy.

ya you will know when this coral is in trouble. like all lps if the skeleton is showing then you have a problem/ dying. give it a while, its not stressed, just munching.

Hi Reef sparky , I have had that happen to an elegance I had previously and in fact my present Green bubble coral has done this twice in last couple of months

its fully inflated its outer walls, which means its tentacles have deflated to compensate ( otherwise it would split itself)

I think, but I dont know, that it does this to create space for its insides to process the food

a bit like me undoing my belt after a curry night out with the lads (LOL)

sparky, it doesn't look good at all dude. When an elegance does this, it is trying to gather more light for more oxygen. it's something that all too often happens to elegance corals and noone knows why. Just an unhealthy specimen and a very unfortunate situation. Every time I have seen this happen, the outcome has been grim for the coral. I hope I'm wrong on this one

When I feed the tank my elegance wads it tentacles up when it catches food but doesn't look quite like that. If you are going to feed the elegance, then go to the grocery store and buy one piece of fresh shrimp (not frozen) and come home and cut about 2 to 3 dime size pieces to feed the elegance. I also feed mine with some stainless steel forceps because you don't' want to to touch the flesh.

Make sure you got fresh carbon in the tank.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. The coral is fine. Apparently it was either excreting wastes, or changing shape to get the food to its mouth.

I did some research and found that this is normal, and to not worry about it unless it retains that posture for more than 2 days.

It was back to normal before bedtime lastnight.

    I'm very relieved!

Sparky if you feed it and I would as this is one of the few corals I'd ever really target feed by hand but use only fresh raw shrimp or get some bait fish and cut it in to dime sized chunks and freeze them until ready and bait shrimp would be better also squid is the best I ever found .
Elegances are finicky corals and the additives in food for humans will effect them and they will blow up like this from infections and food irritants sometimes .. Sea food for humans contains levels of sodium phosphates and other things to lower spoilage rates that the elegance will not like , I have never had any problems keeping them for yrs and yrs . Scott's is like ? 2 or 3 yrs old now I'd guess and I know its grown like a weed also..

Id feed it Just a chunk of food every few weeks or so not weekly . Never touch it where the flesh leaves the skeleton and always wash hands well before and rinse off the soap very well . Hell better yet never touch it and if you must use laytex gloves .
