    I don't see where it would be bad for anything, just a little unsightly is all. Diatoms just feed off of silicates in the water column from my understanding. Once all the silicates are gone, the diatoms will be gone as well. What water source are you using for water changes?

    Kinda the same thing here. Mine wanted the tank and wants to be able to look at it but doesnt want me to spend time maintaining it

    Brita filter tap water, I have a brita filter for reverse osmosis
    tap water has 0 nitrates and 0 nitrites

    I would find a different water source. I get my water from a RO unit at Walmart for 33 cents a gallon. The Brita filter probably isn't removing the silicates from your water and you will continue to have diatom problems.

    You should check the water from Walmart for phosphates because I was getting water from a grocery store unit like that and the carbon they use leached phosphates really bad. I tested the water and it was off the charts lol.

    yeah I actually had that same problem in my fresh water tank when I used bottled water originally, cause the problem with a lot of bottled water or bottled water refill, is ro/di, BUT! they often put back some trace elements and nutrients into the water, not saying all water is this way, but there is chances of it
