ok my son was adding water to the tank to replace evaporated water. we use a cleaned out milk jug. not knowing that the water softener with a iron tank attatched went through a cycle. the tank water turned very very cloudy right away and i am now loosing a yellow tang and a leather coral. the water he used also had an oder to it. this all happen 20 minutes ago. the water is clearing up now (good filter i guess). what the heck happen? anyone ever had this happen? why did i lose only those 2 things and nothing else? are the more delacate or some thing? my shrooms are open wide ,bubble coral open wide, anemones big and open, even my pagoda is still open. my clowns and even my manderan fish was unafected. am i just lucky or what im in such a panic right now. i cant do a water change cause the water is bad or something and i cant afford 100 gallon jugs of bottled water(my store probably dont have that much).:-[ :-[ :-[ :bawling: :bawling: :bawling: :cry2: :end: :end:

Not really sure that I understand what happened here....run on sentences....::) but let me guess here...

Water softeners use salt to remove Magnesium and Calcium. By stating yours was undergoing a cycle, did you mean salt had recently been added? If so, check your salinity in your tank. Perhaps it got raised too high?

I , personally, would invest in an RO/DI unit. Using the softened water over time could raise your salinity to unacceptable levels.

Yes, some animals are more sensetive than others. Tangs seem to be one of those animals. sorry to hear of your loss...:-[

Let me know if I answered your question , and what the results of the salinity check our, just for my edification...Thanks!
