    Hi all,
I was wondering if any of yall have an emergency backup battery system that automatically comes on when your electricity goes out? I want to safeguard my investment and was wondering what brand/type ya'll used.
Any advice on this subject would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Hey Meagan... I went to pet smart and purchased 2 silent air b11 air pumps...
They are battery operated with (d's) and plug in to automically turn on when the power is off. Great investment... hoping it pulls through for me this hurricane season should disaster strike! 12 bucks per unit... worth every penny :)

Im thinking something bigger. Along the lines of being able to run a protein skimmer, powerhead and heater at the same time.
    Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi Meagan1823. I mostly use a UPS by APC. Model: Back-UPS XS 1500 from Bestbuy. The only thing i plug in there is the filter and the heater. I can live without the powerhead running as well as the lights since I only have a FOWLR. My typical runtime is around an hour since we don't typically get power outage here in Michigan but just in case. You might want to check what others will say if they have for example a Reef since i'm sure you would need a better model of UPS that can sustain for a longer period of time.

    ok thanks.
Yes I plan on having a reef. We periodically get power outages from storms so I want to have something that can last 3-4 hours if not longer.
I think the minimum I would need is protein skimmer and heater best if a powerhead was operational as well.

I do know from the office thought that we use Smart-UPS 1500 and we usually stack (using a connector at the back of the main UPS and not daisychain) about 5 of them thus giving us about 5-6 hours of power - depends on the load. Not cheap though, I remember buying one Smart-UPS 1500 that it was about $400-$500 so about $2500 for 5 units. Hope this helps.

I run a Honda generator, and as an additional back-up to that, have a converter wired into my truck. I can run my entire system on my 200 off of the Honda for as long as I can keep fuel in it ;)

Not to hijack your thread, Meagan, but I also have been considering backup sources. We usually have storm outages that can last an hour or long, and I have a couple of battery air pumps.

Does anybody have experience/recommendations regarding the smaller generators, like camping generators? I was thinking of something that would run the heater, return pump, maybe a powerhead or two (and my coffee pot :p).

When I bought our house, long before this great hobby came up, I had a whole house generator installed. One of the best investments I ever made.
