Help need some advice.... New to the hobby. I was just at my LFS and bought an emperor angelfish juvenile. I also bought to more pieces of Live rock with Mushroom corals (brown and purple) attached to them. He said these fish will not bother them....Everything I have read seems to be FOWLR. Any advice would be appreciated. :-[

My advice would be to read first. I have never owned one so, I can't speak from experience. I do know that they have special requirements and that they are in a fish class all their own. Not just for the average bear;D;).

Ive been reading a lot... I just changed my mind at the last minute from a maroon clown. Since he sold them all to me at the same time, I figured it would be OK. He also said that there should be no problem with soft corals....

I've done my fair share of impulse buys;). A maroon clown to an emperor is kind of a doozy though. What size tank and what else is in it?
    Corals and other fish.......

he should be alright with the mushrooms i would imagine, but he'll nip at stony corals, gsp and buttons etc...

as previously stated - not an easy to keep fish at all. Good luck tho - they are pretty, one of my favourite juvenile angels

Thanks for the replies....MISSION-It is a 120 with 50 gallon sump. There is about 60 lbs of Tonga LR and about 50 pounds of Totoka LR. These were the first additions as far as livestock. The tank is fully cycled (4wks) and the rocks were bought cured and into my tank within the hour.

    hey there-

Emperor Angels would have to be my ultimate favorite fish as both the juvenile and adult are impressive. based on my experience with them (I've only had 2 in a 30-year period), they are a typical large angel- they tend to be aggressive with other angels and will pick at SPS, sponges, and clams. I have never kept them in a reef-type setting knowing their feeding habits aren't very predictable.
What size tank do you have? The reason I ask is both of my Emperor's got very large. I wouldn't keep them in anything less than a 200 after they morph into an adult and at least a 125 for the juvie. This gives them a lot of room to swim around which tends to distract them from other fish and corals.
From my experience, they have great personalities and always recognize when it's feeding time. They eat a lot when they reach adult size and poop a lot (right up there with tangs in the pooping department). This could affect your nutrient levels in the aquarium as well.
But not to worry, if you have a small specimen, it's going to be a while before it gets to 10+ inches. One of mine took a long time to change color completely about 5-6 months, while the other changed in about 2-3 months.
Watch out for HLLD for disease. Selcon is a good supplement to help prevent it.
Good luck with your new acquisition, you will be happy with that fish!

WHen i was living in Colorado Springs my roomate had a 180 gal with a emperor angelfish that never touched a single coral or clam the 2 yrs he had it.. For some reason he sold it off to a friend due to he was moving and needed extra $$... The guy put it in a tank at 200gal ... and lets just say it was a feeding freenzy.... The cause of the tempermaen change who knows maybe lack of the foods he was used to... But non-the-less GOURGOUS fish and Good luck...!!!!
