got a rock of yellow polyps the other day, nice rock, decent color, and it has this yellowish encrusting thing on it...so my question is what is it, LFS said it was a sponge so I made sure it wasn't exposed to air...but what is it and how do I help it grow?

+1 on the sponge, and you really dont need to do anything to help it grow.

so it should grow on its own then, are the fairly hardy? I like the looks of it so I want to ensure it stays alive, its in decent flow(not real fast)l...

sponges are incredibly hardy, you really shouldnt have to do much, ive seen some in my old reef grow under rocks, so i dont think they really need light to grow, but im sure that varies with the many different species that is abundant in the oceans :)

You pretty much let sponges do what they want to do. They seem to come and go in my tank. Some are very strong others are not.

Looks to as if it's going to take over the rock and polyp population. In the last pic you can see it moving in on a few of the polyps already. They aren't very healthy looking polyps either. Take a head count to monitor multiplying or dis-appearing.
