okay so I really am debating about buying a metal halide. I have a 36" tank...If I buy a 24" inch fixture, with a 250w MH bulb, and 4x T5's , would there be too much dark space on the side of the tank? Would it look weird, or unusual with just 1-250w bulb in a 36" tank?

I would recommend going LED. A single 90Watt lamp mounted over your tank would provide sufficient light for any type of corals you wish to keep. They are reasonably priced too... I bought two 60W panels for my 48" 55 gallon and I won't ever look back.

The tank would look fine with one MH in my opinion, but personally I think that's a lot of light. I've got 4 36in t5s over a 36in tanks and it's pretty good, so I think you'd have a pretty high light tank with the MH too.
