    First of all id like to say that this is my first post....long time listener, first time caller, so be kind...Secondly, i would like the record to show that i am a newbie. I've only kept freshwater so far, but would very much like to join the elite ranks of Saltwater keepers.
    Onto the question: i was looking to buy a 100 gallon tank but I'm not sure what size light canopy to buy for it. If i bought a 48" VHO canopy would that be enough light?....i know that this would leave a few inches on each side unaccounted for...(by the way the tank is 60" long)

    Build yourself a canopy, if you absolutely cannot build one then look into buying a good used or good new one. The VHO lights you want can be used in a 60" lang tank just offset them in the canopy. I would use a minimum of 4 -110w bulbs. 6 would be better. Using a combination of daylight and actinic bulbs. This would let you keep Softies and other less light demanding creatures.
    So... Do you absolutely have to have vho's or are you just looking? I will give you some helpful links. I am not advocating buying anything from these people. Your choice, just read and learn. Everybody has an opinion. Ususually if you study long enough you can see thru the bull cr*p.

    BTW Karma for your first post. And Good Luck. There is a LOT of information to keep you from making BIG mistakes. You just have to find it. Someone will point you in the right direction or you can do a search from the forum section.

    Hi Trogdor and Welcome!!!! ;D ;D ;D

    Do you have your eyes on any critters you may want to keep? If you are thinking Anemones, clams, or SPS corals at some point, you may want to consider Metal Halide Lighting. It is pricey but if you are handy, you can make and/or retrofit your own canopy.

    I personally, bought my stand, tank, and canopy with MH's used. I got a good deal. Look around...people are always selling lights!!!

    And, ask away!!!! ::)
