A controller would cover your Thermometer, Power Strips, timers, and just about anything else in your imagination.

You can go from a 99 dollar basic package up to a $800 Profilux controller.

IMO an autotopoff is a must. It's not a must to own an aquarium, but it's a must in my scenario. I can no longer carry buckets to the aquarium now that I have an RO/DI plumbed to the sump with a float valve. It's safe, and works well. If you own a Rolls Royce, you'll never buy another cheap car.

I wanted a calcium reactor in the very beginning too, before I became familiar with the hobby. I was given good advice when I was told not to get one in the beginning. You'd only need one for a tank that's dominated by SPS corals, and you won't be doing this tomorrow--

This hobby takes some serious patience and there's a learning curve.

As Telgar said perfectly above--learn to keep your water parameters in check "by hand" before getting a controller. It's perfectly analagous to the old rule "don't use a calculator in the 2nd grade." Learn to do the math by perfecting the craft; and then you may use a calculator all you want. If you must use a calculator to find out what is 9 times 8--you're forever on crutches.

    Good luck. :)

Please do your research befour buying a ozonizer, can be dangerous if used wrong. Being from N.Y. myself you should look into getting some type of clip on fan to help with the heat that Manhattan gets in the summer months.

Do your research. While 3reef is a great place for suggestions, comments, ideas of how things work, you should also do lots of research on your own. This will help you out greatly; I.E., when you finally see a coral you want at the LFS, you will know already, how to care for it, thanks to all that research you've done ahead of time! :) All suggestioins above are great.Good advice.

    Hello there,

I am also in the process of starting up a 45g and looking at many of the same items so I am piggy backing this thread. I am currently researching RO systems. Any recommendations for brand or features that are must haves?

    Thanks!
