    Hello,

I have a 55g tank and about 5 gallons per week evaporate out. Should I top if off nightly or is it ok to wait and do it once per week? Would the weekly top off cause the sg to fluctuate too much?
    Thanks

More often the better. Invertebrates are not good osmoregulators and do not handle sudden changes in salinity well.

THE KEY TO POLLUTION...IS DILUTION....NEVER WAIT TO MAKE YOUR WATER CLEANER!!!I LOSE ABOUT A GALLON A DAY....AND REPLACE IT EVERYDAY WITH A FRESH GALLON...JUST HAVE WATER PREPARED...I ALWAYS KEEP A 5 GALLON TUB OF RO/DI WATER AND A 5 GALLON JUG OF SALT WATER (1.026)
AS I SEE THE WATER EVAPORATING I CHECK MY SALT LEVEL....IF ITS STILL IN THE RANGE I LIKE IT(1.026) ILL JUST ADD ABOUT 3/4 OF A GALLON RO/DI AND 1/2 SALTWATER...IF MY SALT GRAVITY IS A LITTLE LOW(1.024-25) ILL ADD 3/4 OF A GALLON SALT WATER AND 1/2 OF A GALLON RO/DI WATER. IT SOUNDS LIKE A HEAD ACHE BUT THROUGH TIME THIS WILL BECOME RELIGIOUS AND EASIER TO DEAL WITH.

REMEMBER WATER EVAPORATES NOT SALT!!!CHECK YOUR SALT LEVELS BEFORE ADDING ANY WATER...INVERTS DONT TAKE KINDLY TO DRASTIC CHANGES IN THE WATER.

Nothing will make you happier than an auto top-off. I didn't realize it until I got it, but once I did...

Well, very little else has made as much of a difference in my tank.

I've just installed an eshopps float valve which is connected straight from my RO res tank...
with this being done do you think I should be checking my salinity everyday???or should I just check it every so often...
I have a small oceanic salinity meter that ticks on the glass maybe I can use that as a little tool for guidence:-/

Does that float valve shut the pump off or is it hooked to a relay that turns off the pump? if its just shutting off the water that can be a lot dangerous becasue they have been know to fail and allow the water to keep flowing which would overfill your tank with fresh water, remember its got an unlimited supply of water. And yes you should check it, at least for a little while to make sure it not adding to much water.

At 5 gallons a week you might want to consider setting up a real top-off system. They are pretty easy to set up and not to costly to build. As far as I am concerned a gravity fed system is they best way to go if you have the room but a pump operated one is most likely the most common.

Mine is made out of a 5 gallon bucket, a 3/4 inch bulkhead fitting, some 1/4 inch hose with fittings and a float valve, total cost was about 15 bucks. I fill it once or twice a week depending on weather its sumer of winter.

Hey NITTINID Doesn't your caps lock key work? Honestly it makes it really hard to read when you shout like that!
