What would be better for replacing evaporation water? Melting snow(no rain in mid-west states right now)?

Not a good idea since environmental precipitation is acidic. Supply top offs with RO/DI water that is void of all impurities.

I dont know who you been talking to, but thats not a good idea. Maybe 200-300 yrs ago, but not now. I highly dont recommend that practice. Luna

Yup, before the caustic effects of mankind took over the atmosphere and gave us acid rain.

I've never heard of anyone using rain water! or snow. Tap water filtered though an RO/DI unit is by far the bast way. I would use unfiltered tap water before I used rain water

I agree, if you can't use ro water then use tap water, less chance of adding unwanted stuff into your tank water.
