mine come out to swim more when the pumps are off while I am doing the water change, I think they are hoping for food. which usually does happen though.

I'm curious how one would go about deciding if a fish seems less stressed or more...

You aren't talking about long term changes (like a fish losing/gaining weight) so curious how you would judge something like this...

Whats the point of this? Are we providing anecdotal data?

Well if your new water paramaters are way off it would cause some stress issues. Even though we do our best to match it is never 100% although I think it is a greater stress on inverts such as corals than fish. That is why we do suggest smaller more frequent WC over large ones.

What you are percieving as stress is prob more related to fear from big hands coming into the tank and all the noise and commotion associated with the waterchange. I think my fish have even gotten to the point where they recognize me as the one to do WC and clean the tank as well as place corals and jsut cause commition. When they see me they usually dart behind rockwork but they come right up to the glass to almost kiss my wife.

Than again maybe she is just better looking than me lol :)

I am a fan of water changes and have always done them weekly....if i had to guess if fish feel the difference i would say yes:) This is based on would i feel different taking a bath in clean water in lieu of dirty old water. I would feel the difference and i am sure fish can too:)
