Well, if we go off the Hiroyuki Tanaka description:
    it must be P. filamentosus.

well thank you all for the id! its nice to have gotten through that roller coater of an id lol ;)

and i agree that this color is not usually seen in filamentosus species! that is why i grabbed it right away! anyways, with good diet hopefully i can get him to keep his colors... maybe add another male to get them flashing ;)

question: another male of same genus obviously, but same or different species?

Same genus, different species preferably, but if the system is large enough the same species will work too.

Also; it's quite possible it's a hybrid of the two species as well. They do co-exist.

Trent that guy is gorgeous, congrats on being in the right place at the right time. If it is a cross that would be very special.

thats what I was wondering... the other one they had was not close to as colorful and every single picture online shows them with purple stripes compared to the blue mine has. when he is stressed out or flashing he does get those blue dots and vertical bars like you saw in the first picture so maybe its a possiblity!?

Thank you john... I am quite satisfied either way no matter what it is. he is very brave (not at all scared of my hands in the tank inches from him or even the camera right above him) a great eater and colorful :)

The vertical bars are a characteristic of any stressed wrasse, but the other items are interesting.

If it wasn't yet 3", they're might be a possibility it hasn't reached terminal male coloration yet, but I highly doubt that being as grown as it seems already. Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if it does eventually develop the yellow on the tail.

Not surprised to hear about the boldness. IME, the super males have the boldest personality. Color and fear seem to have an inverse relationship. :p My lineatus will play with me if my hands in the tank.

No but I want to because this stupid anthias (that my girlfriend just "had" to have) chased this wrasse out last night right before lights out. I found him while he was still wet but couldn't revive him :(
I am going to stop there on Thursday and see if they have the other male still. Words can't even explain how TICKED OFF I am right now! I want to flush this stupid anthias...

You want me to go up there tonight and see if they have it for you?
