All Halichoeres wrasses sleep in the sand, and therefore cannot be kept in barebottom tanks (as you discovered ;)). And yes, they do have quite an appetite.

The colony actually receded a bit from when I bought it. It's really been more like "how long did it take you to sustain them?" type of question.

I've had them probably ~6 months. Hoping they do a little better in this new location, as it definitely has less light. i've gotten used to them having their ups and downs. It's not uncommon for some of the polyps to close up for 4-5 days and reopen just fine again. ::)

Very nice shots, Canaries are very peaceful. Mine likes to sneak up on some of my other fish and shadow them or get in their space to irritate them it seems. Never is aggressive though.

    Thanks John.

Both my Halichoeres like to be a bit of a pest as well. It's like they get a thrill out of irritating the other fish until they try to snap at them a little, then they prove they can out maneuver the other guy as well. It can be a bit entertaining.

A simple home-jobber. 1/4 clear mesh held in place by a window screen frame, cut to fit each side of the tank. There were a few gaps and such outside the frame as some areas I could only do the corners so tight, but I glued some pieces of eggcrate to the frame to cover all these gaps (unfortunately I didn't think this was necessary until I lost a very nice 5" multicolored velvet :( ). If there's a gap, these guys will find it, eventually.

You can get the clear mesh on BRS these days; I had to eBay mine.

The history of these tops can be found on RC. The original creator's handle is "jimsflies", and hence, these are known as a jimsflies top.

My tank turned one on Monday. Figured it was time for an update.

But first, let's take a look back:
