    Well Im more than sure that you can detect if something is off by looking at corals in no time. I hadnt tested NO3 for at least 4 months..

    Do you think it's important to test Iron and Iodine?

    Meh, sorta. I do think it plays an important role in overall coloration, but you have to already have everything else perfect for it to make a difference. Plus you can kind of gauge things from how your system looks.

    For example; Iron improves green coloration, however too much will cause other colors to have a green hue. It also is an algae accelerator so if you have 0 NO3/PO4 you have to assume that a large amount of algae would be from an over abundance of Iron. Plus you can look at something you know should have specific color; for example a blue stag, and if it starts to get a green hue when it shouldn't there too much Iron.

    A test kit cannot tell you all that;)

    I've recently discovered my problems have been iron driven.

    Took my GFO (source of iron) offline because of it; dosing lanthanum chloride.

    Oh really! I didnt know that GFO is the source of iron either! Did you test the iron? What range should it be?

    GFO = Granular Ferric Oxide

    Ferric Oxide = Rust

    That's all GFO is; rust pellets. :)

    I do not test iron, but my nitrates have long been barely detectable on the low-res salifert, and phosphates at 0.00-0.04 on the Hanna checker.

    The problems I've been fighting for months are receding now 10 days after removing turning off my GFO.

    GFO is essentially rust. It should be low... Really low... below the lowest reading on your test kit.

    Derp! Of course! Makes sense now in some peoples tank, as soon as they offlined GFO, they get the issue under control.

    Yup. It has to do with other elements also usually. I run GFO HC constantly and have since day 1, but I undershoot the amount recommended by 1/2.

    *USUALLY* GFO will only cause trouble with a presence of NO3 and PO4.

    However, in Hunters case this obviously isn't the case, so it isn't always true:)

    Ive never had personal experience with GFO.

    JB had run GFO first, and he decided to add BioPellets, then boom, weird nuisance algae everywhere. Took the GFO offline and he got it under control. I couldnt make sense out of it until today.. :)
