In all honesty, I tried the whole 'fuge with chaeto and mangroves thing. Still had nutrient problems. I tried dosing vodka, and love it. I'm now trying the switch to biopellets. I encourage you to take a look into carbon dosing of some sort, keeps the nutrients down and allows you to overfeed. plus and plus!

I have mangroves in my sump and I don't know if they are doing anything but they are cool and I can see them grow. I'm telling you that a scrubber even if it is just added filtration will help.

I was reading through steve wright's carbon dosing head to head thread. It's amazingly informative!

Besides the cyano creep, I have to scrub the glass DAILY due to the algae film. Do I have nitrate and phosphate? I guess its time to get better test kits.. So if I were to dose something, what would you do?

Lol exactly, you are going from one extreme to the other with those return pumps. I think everyone has their own opinions on that matter, but here is what I've gathered doing research, as I too was confused when I started my build.

Flow through sump: 10x the SUMP'S volume. 20 gallon sump = 200 GPH

Flow in DT (Turnover Rate): Depends on livestock, but recommended MINIMUM 10x DT's volume.

90 Gallon display = 900 GPH. This means if your return is doing 200 GPH, then 900 - 200 = 700 GPH of flow required via powerheads.

Of course that would be the bare minimum, and this can be increased alot.

In my case, I am running a 20 gallon sump, 65 gallon DT. I have a mag7, which I have estimated at my head pressure is doing somewhere around 400 GPH. This is obviously twice the general recommended flow through my sump. But I can control my fuge seperately, and I'm supplying it with a MJ 900 which should be down around the 200 GPH range. So I do 400 GPH through the sump, and 200 through the fuge.

As for the nitrate/phos issue, ATS all the way. I've been reading more and more people who are running them, and have done some research on them. Now I am trying to figure out how/where I can fit one in my system lol.

Yo insanespain. Thanks for your input, and I am one of those who want more flow than they say. I just wanted to try the Mag3 only because I had it and see what happens. I will eventually get something in between Mag3 and Mag 18 LOL.

Should I be worried about the not enough turnover rate with one MP40? I was told it would be enough tho?

Lol yeah. I'm thinking a 9.5 would be perfect.

I think it depends on alot of factors. Obviously SPS need alot more flow than softies/LPS. How you do your rockwork also plays a part IMO. If you add more rock you may want a small powerhead to blow behind the rockwork to cover any dead spots. I would think one MP40 would cover your tank just fine. But dont listen to me because honestly I'm still pretty new to all this flow stuff lol.

Lol, so did you have to almost completely close the valve on the bean with that Mag3? Haha
