If the rock was exposed to high levels of phosphate it will absorb it then release it later as the rock goes through its chemical processes.

Yes it can because it is being used up by the cyano. The green film is phytoplankton which feeds zooplankton which feeds your corals.

Thanks John, do you dose anything to keep phosphate and nitrate low?

I use GFO, carbon, skimming wet and feeding lightly, or at least not feeding too heavily.

Basically, I bought the live rock along with my tank from a guy, and was stupid enough not to test the water before I bought it. Anyway, turns out this rock was sitting in water that was over 10ppm PO4 for who-knows how long, and so the PO4 builds up as mineral deposits in the rock. When I placed it in my system, and started running GFO and what not, the drop in PO4 would allow the PO4 deposits to slowly "dissolve". Thus, I was fighting a never-ending battle with PO4. I eventually threw away all the rock, and started with new dry rock. Before I discovered it was the rock, I almost threw away the tank, it was that frustrating!

Here's the threads below, an interesting read anyway.

^ I see! Im glad you found the PO4 source. When I was reading your build thread a while ago, I was wondering why and what happened to the rocks that came with the tank for a long time. Mystery solved! LOL

Yeah, that was a long, frustrating process that I would wish upon no one. Anywho, hopefully someone someday will see those threads and figure out their problem.

Plan on adding any more corals soon?
