I'm finally taking the plunge to drill my 46 bowfront and install the 29 gallon sump.

I'll be doing a BeanAnimal overflow with a narrow internal weir (due to the narrow width of the bowfront sides, it's 13" i think) then I'll have an external box for the overflow.
My question is can I build a separate box and then use a gasket on both sides of the bulkhead so I can take the box off completely when I need to move the tank.

Any reason to not just use a siphon overflow box? Something like this. I am running the 1000 on my 55 and I have no complaints at all. Also, be careful as I know my 46 gal bowfront has tempered glass on all sides and so can't be drilled. No idea if they are all made this way, but just throwing it out there.

I don't want to risk a flood and don't want noise. From what I've read only the bow &to bottom are tempered and I do believe that jwin and his mom drilled the back of their 46.

    EDIT
just read that offencetaken drilled the back of his 46.

Actually, I don't hear any noise from my overflow box! All of the noise is from the inlet into the sump itself. And there is the same risk of an overflow with either overflow, unless I am missing something.

Also, the tank should have a sticker on the bottom that says what panels are tempered. No idea if you have access to see it or not, but if you do, take a look!

to help with the tempered glass or not issue....take the tank and get some polarized sun glasses and look through the glass at a screen such as a phone or lap top (make sure tank is empty first). You will be able to see the lines/waves in the glass indicating its tempered.

The eshopps overflow isnt bad, i ran one for a year. and you are correct, there is always a risk for overflow but the risk is way higher on any HOB overflox box...if that losses siphon your tank will overflow. A drilled tank doesnt require anything but gravity to work really.

The BeanAnimal overflow is silent and safe (2 back up drains)and self tuning over a wide range of flow. It also has a coast to coast overflow so surface skimming is great. The problem with it is that I don't get want a 5" x 6" box taking up realestate in my little 46.

That makes sense. I think as long as you have proper flow, you should never lose siphon, correct? Even after the pump stops, you would not lose siphon with this style overflow unless enough water evaporated from either side of the box. But either way, my main concern was making sure tempered glass wasn't drilled into ;) Good explanation on how to find out!

correct, with the proper flow the air should stay out of the u-tube, but we dont live in a perfect world and for some its too big of a worry so they just drill.

I am drilling, just wondering if a completely separate exterior box for the pipes to be plumbed into would cause leaks from the bulkheads that will attach it to the tank (can use 2 gaskets, one for inside the weir & one for the overflow box, if that would help).
