    The important thing is that it's external and it's hard plumbed.

    Seems there are internal external combos and straight up external.

    So if the return is gravity fed I assume the supply is hard plumbed from pump to sump.

    Correct - "hard" being a relative term (doesn't need to be rigid PVC)
