i have a brain coral that is placed on the sand, in my reef. It's propped against some rock rubble.
When i purchased it from the LFS, about 6 months ago it had a green center, with nice pink outlines around the outside. Now it is very pale, and has not much color to it at all.
I have another brain, sitting higher on my LR, which seems to be doing well. It is of a different variety, but a brain non the less.
My question is, what do you think the problem is with the faded brain?

What's your lighting and how deep is your tank? Do you have it near any leather corals? I had a Trachyphylia that would not even open near a leather because of their "chemical warfare", but when I moved the leather away it started to flourish. It's still going strong and it's a real beauty. What are your other parameters? What is your temperature. We need more information

Lights are 3- 250w MH 4 actinics. Temp is maintained at 77-80 degrees. My LFS checks my parameters, so i'm not sure what they are. I will try to get more info.

try moving it up alittle in the water column and see if that helps. but it just sounds like it mabye a lighting issues assuming that your water is good and temp in not to high.

i was keeping my lights on 24hrs, when my heater broke. Maybe that was the problem? It was for like a month stretch, until i was able to purchase my new heater.

yeah that could have something to do with it. the corals are living animals and do need time to rest and be out of the light. not to metion that some corals only open up to eat in that after hours [my open brain feed at nite] plus that is stressfull for fish that arent ment to be in that type of lighting enviorment. so i would stop that having your lights on for 24hr

It probably started to bleach. They require lower light levels and 3 250w mh is a lot of light. Corals require dark periods to 'rest,' they perform certain biological functions at night. Having your lights on 24hrs a day was probably what is causing it. Just curious, but why did it take a month to get a new heater?

I originally ordered it from my LFS, and he kept saying it would be in "tomorrow", so i kept giving him the benifit of the doubt. I'm a long haul trucker, so i'm away a lot. I finally said the heck with waiting, and ordered one on line. I'm back to a regular schedual of 12 hrs actinic, 10 hrs MH.
