This may be a stupid question, but here goes. My DT is currently empty of fish - all my fish are in a hospital tank being treated for crypt. The fish will remain in quarantine for another 6 weeks from now. In the mean time, my DT is positively INFESTED with pods. Some large, some small. I guess with the fish gone for the past 2 weeks, there have been no natural predators and the population has exploded.

Anyway, I have always planned on getting a mandarin. And now seems like a good time, since all the pods are getting a little gross. I know that mandarins are resistant to crypt naturally.

So here's the question - if I were to put a mandarin into my tank now, would that defeat the purpose of the tank lying fallow? Would it serve as a host for the crypt to survive until the rest of the fish are returned? Or would its natural resistance to crypt make this unlikely?

leave it as long as possible the 6 weeks or whatever it is. be sure its out before you add your fish back. Why chance it?

Deep down I agree with you - why chance it. It's just that all the little white bugs in my tank are getting a bit disgusting. But I'll probably wait a few weeks for the mandarin then.

I know it's tempting, but I would pass on the mandarin to. Why risk it? I had the same thing happen to me when I went fallow. And just think, when you add your fish back to your DT you might make the competition for pods too high for that mandarin to keep up with.

I agree with what everybody says..
and another thing, if you only see the increase in pods population when your fish are gone that means it's not that stable.. a mandarin can eradicate the whole population in no time.. something to think about
