and I'm not out to give the stuff a bad name.

I've decided controllability you lose with the all-in-one medias for the convenience of having it all together simply isn't worth it to me.

The extra 2 mins it takes to make my own GFO / carbon mix at way less cost in the long run (by purchasing in bulk) and having much, much more controllability was a bad plan (for me) to veer away from.

There is a market for these products, I know chemi pure elite has an awesome track record, and it's definitely for larger tanks\bio loads.

The, "Throw this bag in for a few months and throw away your worries!" plan just didn't work for me.

Personally, if I had a larger tank with much more $ invested, I'd be even less likely to try new products that could be harmful snake oil.

Funny, because I just posed a question about using Chemipure Elite or GFO and the responses I received were for me using my own GFO, yet at a smaller dosage then they call for. I guess trying to save a little time may not be that great.
I will be following this thread and see how the birdsnest fairs.

    Update: 2/7/13

Soooo... I may be putting a sump on this baby soon. ;D

I grabbed a U tube style overflow last night.

Met a cool local chap a few months back who works with acrylic - he made the overflow box, hang on refugium and sump baffles. Sump is a standard 10 gal since that's all that'll fit.

I really, really, really wanted to drill when doing an O.F. but I decided to draw a line on the direction of where I'm taking this tank... :stop:
Hopefully I'll be selling my place, buying and moving this year which will finally open up my options for, yup, a bigger tank. So with that and other things on the horizon, I'm trying to not go all out with this tank.
    Definitely haven't decided on a DT yet but I'm thinking either a cube, a 90 or a 120. But i digress...

I plan on building a manifold soon but still need to pick out a return pump.

I beLIEve I'd like to have 100-300 gph thru the overflow....
Reactor - 300 ish (my mj 900 does not tumble GFO sufficiently @ 230gph)
    Fuge - 30-80 max
    Return - 300 max
Total = 500 low end - 700 gph high end after 4' head

    QUESTIONS...

    1. Looks like a 1" U tube so I think I need to pick one up a size smaller to keep the flow thru the tube fast but still have a reasonable GPH for my tank/sump size. Correct?

    2. Should I consider plumbing the skimmer into a return or no?
(AquaC Remora running on a Colbolt MJ1200 now - 300GPH)

    3. Suggestions on a return pump? These are what I've been considering.
    Any thoughts welcome.

    Sicce Syncra 3 (715gph) - 5 year 100% warr thru LFS I belive
    eheim compact 3000 (400-800 adjustable)
    Mag 7 (700)
    Mag 9 (900)
Deep blue triton 4 (1000gph)- is 1/2 the $ of the others even at the LFS, they are using 2 of the 4's for their returns and a 5 for the skimmer of their big show tank and have had no issues for a year+ so far... and ONLY 40 Watts!

I have the Sicce Syncra 2.0 and love it. I never hear that pump running, my MJ1200 makes more noise running my reactor than my return pump.

Looking forward to your sump build.

    Thanks guy, good to know.
I've only heard A+ things on Sicce equipment. I've been leaning towards the Syncra 3 and Eheim compact for a few months ... however, last night after talking to the LFS about the deep blue's, I'm starting to think about them in the Triton 4 or 5.
Again like I said, it's not going to be my dream tank so I'm trying to valve down the urge to go 100% on quality, but it's an important piece for sure and I always say buy once, cry once.
