i got a brown and white striped i think ( dont know yet the exact type) feather duster 2 days ago. ive read that it needs a daily feeding of phytoplanktons. my tank is only a month old. where can i get that stuff, or will it thrive on its own without feeding? is it photosynthetic? how much light does it need? thanks for the help!

I feed mine Kent microvert--I only add a capful once maybe twice a week. They get alot of their food from what flies around in the water.

I use exactly the same product once per week in my tank and have had 3 feather dusters as freebies on the rock I set the tank up with in Sept 2008 - all 3 doing well still

In addition the simple task of cleaning the tank glass will put food stuff for them back into circulation

I've had a 3" feather duster for 6 -8 weeks now. I don't add any extra food for it. I'm guessing it feeds off the fish poo and micro foods suspended in the water column. It still looks like it's doing great. If I really do need to supplement it, someone let me know.

Kent microvert? ill have to look for that on my next visit. any one of you got them to reproduce? i noticed a tiny one that looks like it pop out behind it the day after i set it in. couldn't have been there before i got the feather duster cause that part of the LR was buried under the sand for a month, before i reaarranged it the same day i bought the feather duster.

thanks again for your replies. just a thought steve, what type of coral you got there in your headshot? i love it!

I dont believe you have to, I supplement the tank in general once per week and dont target feed mine specifically, it will collect whats in the water

when they reproduce they shed their feathers to stop them consuming thier own off spring and your water goes really milky cloudy as a result of the spawning - its probably an unrelated species of fan worm thats on your live rock.

Thanks - Its a Torch coral with 9 heads at present - its more pink than green and thats why I chose it from a tank full of the more common coloured ones

I use my baster and blow crud off of my rocks. My duster eats it up readily.

you're probably right steve. my water is perfectly clear. just today i noticed there are two of them already and they're growing fast. just wished they grew on a more viewable location. but it did shed a few crown stems.

i used a power head on the rocks and a lot of dirt came off! is that too strong cause the aiptasias' tentacles shrunk?

anyone knows how i can get rid of the feather duster's poo except siphoning them out? they collect on the sand so fast and they look hideous.::)

here's a photo of my feather dustie!

increase your circulation slightly to that area. my coco worms poo floats around the tank and the fish chase it. lol
