Ugh. Usually in my experience, when the big ones come out of the tube, they eventually die. :p

I've never heard of anyone transplanting them or covering them up with substrate.

Consider it gone. In my experience Feather Dusters are nice to look at and usually grow like crazy in a new tank, but as the tank matures unless you know exactly what to feed them?? they are a short lived tube worm. I wouldn't spend a lot of money on them, and I don't buy them anymore. They are kinda like flame scallops they only live a short time anyway.

I'm sure someone else will chime in and tell you they have had one for ten years ;D I'm just relating my experience. Keep on having fun...

At my facility we get about 1/5 of all freshly imported feather dusters that have jumped ship.  I put them in a lower flow tank with sand on the bottom.  Within 5 days thay have a nice sand encrusted tube and are rady to be sold.  I guess I'm the one your speaking about when you said "and some guy will chime in and say he's had one for ten years."  Not tens years, but several.  I fed phytoplankton and have for years.  I'm plagued by small tube worms in a tank I set up for a friend.  It's a surge tank that is fed phytoplankyon as well.

I have had a Hawaiian feather duster in my tank for a little over a year now and it is doing great. I feed it ESV Spray-Dried Phytoplankton, Hopefully it will continue to do well ::) :p..... John

I also have had 2 for about 9 months. They are doing great and are very intresting to watch...especially for people new to salt tanks. I would buy more again. Its a mixed opinion on these.

    Jay.....PRO Duster ;D
