Last night my feather duster shed it's crown and then this morning I found it outside it's tube lying on the sand. It is still alive and moves if I disturb it, can anyone tell me what is going on and should I expect it to die?

If it comes out of the tube they rarely survive. Don't know why but would guess your params are out of whack.

Please post test results for all params you test.

What are your nitrate levels? Other than fish or crabs picking on them, or them starving, nitrates are the most common cause of this. You might need to protect the worm if you have aggressive fish or crabs. A plastic strawberry or blueberry basket from the grocery store can be turned upside down over it. (I'm obviously assuming you're feeding it phytoplankton....if they starve, they will blow their crown and hope to move elsewhere where it can find food)

I agree with 2in10. Chances are it won't make it and it was more than likely a water quality issue. I've read other posts along the same lines and the outcome was never good. Sorry to hear it and hope it works out for you and the worm. If it's worth anything I've heard that coco worms are a little more tolerant of stressors and out live feather dusters so that may something to look into if you'd like another worm.

They can pop there crown and rarely will they stay long enough for them to grow back. If it left the tube then chances are its a gonner. Hopefully the fish leave it alone but even if they do they can grow a new tube but chances are its a gonner. I lost a few when adding alk they stressed and poped. I wish you the best of luck.
