    Dear readers --

I bought an unknown skimmer off craigslist when I first set up my 30 gallon coral/fish system, for about 30 bucks. Useless, threw it out. Bought a JEBO skimmer off craigslist following this... was way too big and I couldn't get it to work right... paid 30 for it, and sold for 50 though! Next, I went to my LFS and they sold me a used Red Sea Prizm skimmer. It's HOB and it works FANTASTIC about... one day a month. Then it all goes to crap, I get no bubbles, or I get overflow... Also, the impeller is loud as hell, which is a problem since the tank is in my bedroom. I paid 40 for it, and now that it isn't working, my corals are suffering.

I want either a new skimmer, or if you guys absolutely recommend it, a new pump for my skimmer (which are about $30 including shipping).

What I'm asking is: what's a good HOB skimmer for less than 150-200? Also, if you think it's a better investment, do you think I should set up an overflow to a sump? This would be a lot of work but if it's worth it in y'alls opinions, I can try. Note that I don't plan on upgrading to a larger system for a minimum of two years, so that's not really on my mind at the moment.

Thanks everybody, you guys always help me out when I need it.

    -David

Sump is definitely a better option as your skimmer choices will greatly increase.

As for HOBs, I used an AquaC Remora that worked well and I recommend.

I currently use a AquaC Remora on my 29g tank and I would definitely recommend it. I found mines on ebay used to $75 shipped.

Thanks for your inputs guys... a worker at the LFS mentioned that his preference is a coralife super-skimmer. Know anything about this one?

I have a coralife 65 and have been really happy with it, but I know others will say otherwise. But I would recommend one if thats the most you are willing to spend.

I use to have that skimmer. It was ok for the amount of time that i kept it. My issue with it was that i didn't like how it looked hanging off the back of my 29g. Its a bit of an eyesore on a small tank. That was the only reason why i sold it for a AquaC

I should add that I used my CSS as an in sump skimmer so looks weren't important

Those of you who are happy with an AquaC, you're all happy with it? What are the pros and cons? Is it relatively quiet?

Also, how would you recommend I buy one? Used off ebay? New off ebay? Is warrantee an issue (IE should I buy it new from the company?)

You know, after reading your original post in this thread, the feeling i got is that you need better maintenance of your skimmer.

It's recommended to take these down every 2 or 3 months and give it a real good thorough cleaning.

What happens is coralline, salt crystallization/salt creep, algae/sponge, or just plain ol debris start to clog the air lines, or slow down the pump, or inhibit water movement in someway.

So if you're seeing skimmer after skimmer stop working after just a couple months... it may very well simply be maintenance. They are not intended to just work. Same is true for your powerheads and other equipment. All of this needs to be cleaned regularly. Some brands and models might be more forgiving than others, but they all need periodic cleaning.

    Good luck.
