I have an unusual tank that seems to be doing well, even though I'm running against much conventional wisdom. My main question here is how to get some additional nutrition to the corals, preferably via nutrient uptake from water column like with amino-acid dosing. I currently am dosing a trifle of L-Aspartic Acid (from Iherb.com) based on info I've gotten from browsing forums. It does appear to help growth, but not drastically.

I am basically trying to get low-phosphate (or, phosphate-free) nutrition to the corals. I feed tiny amounts of flake food to keep my two fish well fed, but that's it.

If anyone can suggest a coral "food" or amino-acid (DIY amino acid, or an affordable off-the-shelf product), I would be all ears, thanks! I'm interested in targeting the growth of the SPS mostly, but I'm sure anything that feeds SPS will also feed softies/LPS.

The tank sits on a razors-edge for algae. I very rarely have any sizable algae blooms, but if I feed just a tad more than I do now (flake, or frozen) I get more hair algae. Thus I'm trying to increase nutrition to the corals without going bonkers on the phosphates.

Here are the tank basics, just for info.

    Size-- 36"X9"X9" (roughly 11-13g).

Lighting-- Cree LEDs-- 3 warm white, 3 neutral white, 12 royal blue.

Filtration-- Only a small HOB filter with carbon. No skimmer, no fuge, no GFO.

Dosing-- 2-part. Alk daily, calcium as needed. Alk comes in the form of dosing Vitamin C powder, buffered. If you want more info on dosing Vit C, read this thread: http://www.3reef.com/forums/general...-can-done-carefully-129771-3.html#post1327212

Nitrates-- 2ppm or lower (Seachem kit), phosphate remains around 0.05 or undetectable (Seachem kit). Tank has remained at these levels, give or take a trifle, basically since the startup.

Fish-- a small perc and one 6-line wrasse.

Corals--- usual garden variety of softies, LPS, SPS. See the main thread below for actual pics. I refuse to put ugly corals in my tank, but I also don't shoot for the latest $50/frag stuff. I let you guys do that and then bum frags off of ya lol.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
I feed Rods Foods, it's frozen. I feed every 3 days that includes fish. All my corals love it as well as my fish. Sps like it too but feeding them is a slow process.
There are a couple different types of Rod's, ones for fish and ones for corals, I have used both.
I hear good things about Reef Chili but have not tried it yet.

I feed Rods Complete 1x weekly and Coral Extacy 1x monthly. Other then that it's all about water changes :)
