so ive had a 150w metal halide fixture on my 40 gallon acrylic tank for a while now. Within the past month and a half i have upgraded to a 14k phoenix bulb from a stock 10k bulb. I honestly feel like it just isnt enough light (sorta purplish/not the blue i expected). The 10k was pretty bright but didnt bring out hte colors. The 14k phoenix brings out nice colors but not bright enough for my liking. What do you guys think? On a 40g acrylic 36" long tank, u think 150 watts is enough for soft corals/anenomes (no lps, maybe a few sps eventually). Currently housing tons of soft corals/condylactis and they are doing great.

i have 234 watts of t5s over my 40 breeder

i think u have plenty of light over the middle of the tank..the sides may be a little dark...an average halide gives u 2' x 2' coverage.. thats why i went with t5s over mine...it would be hard to use halides and give me coverage without using 2 pendants.

if it were my tank i would add one more 150w halide with a 14k phoenix bulb..

do you think thats better than selling my fixture and getting either a 250 watt with t5s or a 400 watt solo.?

if i were u i would think about just t5s..a 6 bulb fixture over ur 40 will grow the heck outta anything... i used to be a huge halide junky but t5s have changed my mind, so i dont have the shimmer but i really didnt get much of a shimmer anyway since i supplemented with t5s... over ur 40 u would have to use 2 halide fixtures, since they only cover about 2 feet... but they do make the halide t5s combo fixtures which would work...i just think u will get better coverage and growth if u go with t5s, at least a 4 bulb, but 6 bulb would be perfect..

plus u can get any color bulb u want...i can change my tank blue, white, pink, purple and whatever other color by turning on and off certain bulbs..

i love my halide and the shimmer effect so i dont want to stray from that. But what if i supplemented with 2 36" inch t-5 retrokits on each side of the halide. Could do like a 2 10 bulbs and 2 actinic?
