So I have film that always forms on the top of the water on the right side. Left side has the drain) As far as I can tell it's not hurting anything but it bothers me when I look into the tank. I just did about a 15% water change on Sunday and I tried sucking some of the top water up but it didn't really help. It doesn't get sucked down the drain and I just changed the flow position on the return from my sump. I am not running anything other than a skimmer in the sump. The tank has been up since later November so it is still very new. Any ideas?

Its proteins and stuff. Do you have a skimmer? Point a powerhead at the surface and that should disrupt it enough to keep it from happening.

Most likely a protein build up on the surface due to not enough surface agitation. My sump gets it all over because there is no flow at the surface of the water. When it gets bad I ladle it off.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
You just need to change the direction of your power heads until you no longer see a collection of proteins or the film.

Change the flow, give it awhile and if you still have the same issue either increase the flow or change the flow pattern. The entire surface area should be agitated to some degree to prevent this.

It does interfere with gas exchange (CO2 out, O2 in).
