I have a scummy film on top of the water surface in my tank. Open top tank so no problem there, skimmer is working fine, and i just added two more powerheads specifically to make sure the surface was agitated enough. Still no luck though. I'm thinking i need to get my overflow/sump working after all to get some sort of surface skimming going. What do you guys think?

    Thanks

Two things you can do. One is the sump. That is what I do. Together with surface agitation, that will take care of the problem (I mean opportunity----that is corporate speak). A surface skimmer is available if you do not have the resources to build a sump. Both are effective, but lemme tell ya, I have Nooooooo problem with surface scum running an overflow and good surface agitation.

I occasionally get the same thing. I have powerheads tearing up portions of the water, but it just doesn't agitate the entire surface area of my 55.

I have a surface skimmer... meh, I guess it's not up high enough to really skim the surface as I see this film build up and not move around it. Once I automate top-off's, I expect I'll be able to keep it raised a bit higher.
