Ill soon be upgrading to a 36g bf. I recently bought a via aqua skimmer filter combo. The skimmer is quite amazing. The filter is not, and offers no cartridge to run carbon. Im thinking of adding a small canister filter for added filtration, as my water clarity has lessened since the installation of the new filter combo. (params , however, have remained on point). Is it safe to do so? If so, what is a good (but economical) cantister for a 36g?

if you want external cannister filter , then I would go either Ehiem or Fluval
both of these brands have proven to be very good in terms of longetivity for me

If another HOB unit is what your looking for, the Hagen Aquaclear models are also very good IMO

Either of the above would be great for running carbon or any other chemical filter media
with the external Fluval or Ehiem, having a greater capacity than the HOB, so you could as you dont have a sump, run GFO in addition to carbon in the external cannister
