Not sure what your looking for. I've always subscribed to the thought that a sump should have baffles designed to trap any bubbles coming from the over flow line and the skimmer as well the baffles would act in such a way that the last compartment, where the return pump would be would be the only compartment in the sump that would be effected by evaporation. this way any top off system could monitor this area. And most in-sump skimmers do not react well to changes in water height

You got that right my friend! My Aqua-C is a pain in the butt because of the CPR wet/dry evaporates where the skimmer sits, so the skimmer is never 100% reliable. That's why I'm designing my own filtration system now.
If you just want a simple sump, go with Jason's suggestion. I would suggest incorporating a fuge though, your entire system will benefit from that.

The best way to get a good sub system is to get the largest tank you can fit under your tank. Then make a sump/fuge tank out of that and figure out what is the best design for that, either by looking online, or asking for pointers here. Spending $1200 on a box is nuts, but then again, some people say I'm nuts for buying a Bubble King skimmer. :p

Kedron, Lifereef do make good sumps but there really isn't any reason you could not build something very similar from a cheap tank and a few sheets of glass or Acrylic you could get cut for the job at a local glass or plastics shop.
