I dont think this is an emergency. I have a 45 gallon tank and the mechanical filter (aquaclear 300) didnt turn back on after i shut off the power on sunday to do my monthly water change. I ordered another one online, but it wont get here till next thursday. I still have my Remora Protien skimmer running. I only have 3 fish 2 clowns and a lawnmower bleeny, some snails and a shrimp. No corals.

Any particular preventitive action I should take till the new filter arrives next week.

Oh and has anyone had that happen to them? turn a pump off and then when you try to start it back up it doesnt work?

    Glen.

As long as you have the skimmer & phs going you'll be fine.

I agree with glampka. The skimmer should get you by just fine since there is not an extremely heavy load except for just a few fish. A lot of times the impeller just has something holding it up from spinning and will be back good as new once you get it cleaned out. I have brought back two pumps this way and saved myself some money.

You will be fine with just the skimmer as I feel that the Aquaclear(mechanical filtration) is a waste of money, for saltwater tanks! ...The Remora is great and will do an adequate job of removing pollutants and increasing dissolved oxygen into your pelagic areas of your tank!

really? you dont think you need mechanical filtration for saltwater tanks? Because for a while now I was thinking because i dont have a refuge I should turn the aquaclear into a spot for macro-algae

Nope not at all!!! Fish, coral etc. waste is different from that of freshwater fish! Bubbles associated with the skimmer collect particles and they attach almost like velcro to the air bubbles and are then collected and deposited into the skimmate cup! Just like the waves at the ocean...
That is it in a nut shell!!! I could go on but right now I am off to work!

I've been running my 30 for 5 years with just a Bak Pak 2 & phs for circulation. No problems whatsoever.

If you have no other means with which to run carbon, I would continue to use the filter until you find another way to get water through a bag of carbon.
