I've been doing research and I want to use a 100 gallon rated canister filter with a UV sterilizer on a 55 gallon reef... But take out the biological media and replace it with carbon media?

    Just want/need opinions
    Thanks! :)

Personally, I dont like using canisters on saltwater tanks because they require too much maintenance to keep clean, but they do a great job at polishing the water (that could be a pro or a con depending on your goals). If you have enough live rock then you could replace the biological media with more chemical media if thats what you want to do.

Agree it could be done, but I'd recommend a media reactor over a canister. Both the UV sterilizer and the carbon would work better with the lower flow.

Well, most canister filters only pump like 300gph through them. I think the flow is just fine. We run several clients tanks with rena xp3's packed with either carbon or polyfilters. Work wondering on keeping the water nice and crystal clear
