    What exactly is it and what is it for? Mine started making a whistling noise that was driving me nuts so I took it off. Noise went away and skimmer seems to be working perfectly fine. That just made me wonder what the hell its even for.

    Sounds like your talking a bout the silencer. It prob started making noise due to some salt creep getting into it. Rinse itl well in hot water then flush with RO water.
