    So I have a HOB and it's pretty small so i'd like to run some filter media that would help out with nitrates and whatnot. I'm making a fuge in the future but for now I'm just sticking to a HOB really. Any suggestions?

    Yeah, I would make it into a fuge. Some chaeto and maybe run carbon in a media bag as well.

    well thats kind of what i meant. what exactly is the purpose of running carbon?

    if you have coral, it removes the poison or something that coral expel when they fight. It removes meds and makes your water clearer I guess.

    Anyway im thinking of running carbon for now; im probably gonna get chaeto later on after the cycle is done

    i would not use a sponge, put some small live rock fragments in there, with carbon and some chaeto and your good to go.

    then dont do the carbon, just live rock and chaeto, and some of that reef mudd stuff could help too
