Hey all i am looking for some good insight. I have my 55gal tank and i will be having an HOB refugium and i have a HOB swc skimmer. Do i need a filter. I really have no room for a sump. I have a deal i can but a barely used magnum 350 filter. I am questioning if i really need it. Any insight would be great. Sorry my current filter is an HOB one but its getting replaced for the refugium.

I think as long as you have a skimmer you are fine without a filter. that's what I've been told anyways.

Carbon can help clear out "warfare" chemicals

Carbon can/will help, but is not a necessity. My corals perked up when I stopped using carbon.

This, and it can also remove the chemicals that yellow the water over time.

Since you're all HOB, just rig up a HOB media reactor for carbon and phosban. After that you should have all the bases covered. And, get some chaetomorpha growing in ur fuge.

Yep, you can. Carbon doesn't need to be in direct flow to be effective, although it works better like that.
