If my tank comes with a HOB filter, is a sump/fuge necessary?

There are benefits, but you might be able to get away without one. What kind of tank is this going to be? Sumps give us a nice place to hide our equipment (even hob filters), add more tank volume and adds additional surface exposure for degas, generally helps in aerating the column as well. That being said, can you get away with hob only? Sure you can, many people here probably are set up in the same way – so in direct response to your question, no a sump/fuge is not necessary…..but in my opinion very desired.

I have been looking and wondering the same for two weeks. Just bought a 125 gal will be a reef with some coral and a few fish. I will be using a canister or two hang ons. canister 300.00 or two hang ons 75.00. not just the money but the maintenace. Not trying to jack your thread but a good question. Good luck.
