Yes to fuge. Put chaeto in it to keep ph, nitrates, and algae under control. A skimmer is a must for any aquarium over 30 gallons. The aqueon pro flex model 4 sump is my favorite

For a reef? I'd say yes.

For a FOWLR, not so much.

Coralife Super Skimmer? That's my least favorite piece of equipment I've ever purchased...

I kept mine for about 3 months...microbubbles galore (even after 2 different mods that supposedly eliminated them) and skimmate production was less than optimal...

I finally banished it to my fish closet and replaced it with this and have nothing but good things to say about it.

Honestly you could be successful with whatever filtration system method is used. By contrast you can also fail with just about any system you use. It's all about balance. In all cases you need to break down ammonia to nitrite then to nitrate. Most any form of filtration can do that.

The key becomes in how you rid your system of nitrate and phosphate. Some choose a skimmer, refugium, GFO, biopellets, deep sand bed, water changes, live rock, carbon dosing, bacterial supplementation, ect... They all can work, they all can fail. You just need to pick a method and decide what is needed to make it succeed! Good luck in your choice.
