Does anyone here use a filter sock in their system? I was thinking of adding one to the water entering my sump to filter out any particulate matter. Do you need a special filter sock bought at a LFS, or can any regular sock suffice (LFS charges $16 for their socks, while Walmart charges about $5 for several)?

I do. But I only use filter socks that are rated to 200 microns. I don't want any of my DT or Oyster Feast getting caught up in them. Just the big stuff. Just change them out twice weekly so they do not become a little nitrate factory. You can wash them in the washer on delicate with bleach and the two rinse cycle. Then hang dry. They are pretty much dry anyway after the spin.

Rinse one more time in RO before use.
